and the award goes to

just in case you're not sick of hearing about the Oscars...

direct quotes from us while we watched (yes I made poor matt watch the Oscars):

in reference to Robert Richardson during his Oscar speech - "I like his monochromatic shirt and tie...... (and hair)" - me

“I don’t really like Bradley Cooper’s creeper stache” - me

"I really want to see Hugo" - me

“get it?  Because Kodak filed?” - me

"I really want to see My Week With Marilyn" - me

"I want to go buy some stuff from JCPenney to support Ellen.  I keep forgetting" - me

"I really want to see the Girl with The Dragon Tattoo but I’m too scared” - me

"What is Hugo even about?" - matt
"adventure I think... I don't know" - me

in response to Hugo winning sound mixing Oscar -  "Damn!  Who did they sleep with to get all these Oscars?  Has anyone else won anything yet?" - matt

"What the hell is this?" - matt
"Cirque du Soleil performance" - me

"Miss Piggy always looks fabulous" - me

"I really want to see Albert Nobbs" - me

"I really want to see The Artist" - me

"Rango?  Wasn’t that like 3 years ago?" - matt

"I love Emma Stone." - me
"Why do you love Emma Stone?" - matt
"Because she’s so beautiful and funny and she’s good at color blocking." - me

"I never realized Zach Snufalufagus was short" - me

"people should thank animals in their speeches more often" - me

and then matt fell asleep so there was no more talking.

good investment

I’m going to tell you a secret about women…

every day or at least many days of the week, we are wearing one of three (maybe four) things that circulate through our laundry every. single. week.

we have favorite “camis”… a black one, a white one, a grey one, and maybe a nude one (although I take issue with this color being named nude, because there aren’t very many people who are actually this color when nude – but that’s another blog post).  They might be some variation of a cami – like a tank top with a thicker strap, or a basic tee for layering, or a wife beater (speaking of names I take issue with) but it’s all the same idea.
we wear them for many reasons, and they serve many purposes:
  • they help with blouses not being see-through
  • they look good under sweaters
  • sometimes they help with things needing to be sucked in or lifted up
  • maybe we need an extra layer for warmth
  • maybe we need a bottom layer that is light for a hot day when we want to remove the other layers (this one doesn’t apply to me, but I hear it’s true)
  • they go under a suit, dress, shirt, etc…
  • sometimes we wear them even if they don’t serve a purpose because it doesn’t feel right to not wear one.
we work in them, play in them, work out in them, and sleep in them…  and sometimes when we think nobody will notice and it’s a weekend, and we’re too lazy to do laundry, and they’re not too stretched out – we wear them for all of those things.

here’s the thing.  they cost like $6.00 - $10.00.  I’m sure there are some you can buy somewhere for like $50… but they do the same thing as the $6.00 ones, so if you’re spending $50, you should send me some of that money you don’t need.  so they’re crazy cheap, and they’re made out of fabric as thick as tissue.  so despite the fact that they cost less than lunch, we only have three of them and we wear the same three every day for centuries.

and when we’re digging through our closet or dresser for the black one for the third time each week only to discover that it’s in the laundry (because we put it on when it came out of the dryer) it never occurs to us that perhaps we should spring for a second $6.00 black cami.

i examined my camis this weekend, and decided this was nonsense.  the grey one has a paint spot (because we also wear them for home renovation), and a tiny hole in one seam.  the white one has a couple holes, and one broken strap which was eaten by the dryer, and this week the black one came out with one eaten strap too.

today I’m breaking the cycle.  I ordered 7 new camis in four different colors and fits, and I can’t imagine how great life will be now with all of these possibilities.

animal "crackers"

we went to Target the other night for toothpaste and trash bags...
but I needed to look at a few hundred other things.

while we were passing the "grocery" section, Animal Crackers jumped out at me (as things often do at Target), and I needed them.
While I was deciding whether or not to spend the $0.59, I accidentally broke the string...
and then Matt said "now how are you going to carry it?" <--- hilarious reason # 7,598,201 why I married him
then he started singing a little song:
"animal crackers in my soup, monkeys and lions(?) loop de loop" <--- hilarious reason # 7,598,202 why I married him

I asked him where the song came from, but he didn't know.  Then we had a discussion about whether animal crackers are a sweet snack, or truly a "cracker" for things like soup.

then later, he figured out where the song came from:
love.
also, I secretly assume that our children will look like Shirley Temple.

burrito friends

Once upon a time a girl and her brother were invited by her brother’s friend to have breakfast burritos with other friends at a random Betos on a Saturday morning in March.

After ordering her burrito, the girl took it upon herself to introduce herself to the two strangers dressed in black who arrived to join the group of breakfast burrito friends.

“Hi, I’m Drew’s sister, Megan” (she was always sure to make it clear that Drew was her brother and not her boyfriend when meeting new men)

The man with the beard smiled a little, and said his name was Matt (she was surprised how much she liked his smile)… the other guy didn’t say much, but someone told her his name was Trent.

The burritos were okay, but the company was good, and the girl spent her time observing the strangers in black.  She was trying to hear everything they said, because they were funny… but also trying to not be creepy about it.

When they left breakfast, the girl told her brother how cute Matt was 12 times until her brother told her he would barf if she said it again…

The girl didn’t know why, but she couldn’t stop thinking about that stranger in black… there was just something about him.

WEEKS later the girl received a text from the mutual friend asking if Matt could have her number.  She agreed.

DAYS later she received a text from him.  She was impressed with his correct use of punctuation and grammar even while texting.

They wanted to meet, but didn’t because of this or that… then texting sort of stopped, but she still thought about him a lot.  She sent him a text one day and said “did you forget about me?”  To which he said “who is this?”

She felt incredibly stupid, but explained and then apologized for the interruption in a way she hoped was charming.  She didn’t know how it happened, but somehow he managed to trick her into chasing him.

Luckily… the conversation recovered, and he eventually asked her to go to The Bayou for what would be their first date.  The date almost didn’t happen because the girl had a bad habit of hyperventilating before first dates and then not going… but she called her sister, and her sister managed to convince her that she should go on the date.

The date went well.
They liked each other.
A lot of other stuff happened.
They got married.

And then on their first valentine’s day as a married couple, he took the girl to the place where they had their first date, and they sat at the same table, and talked about how nice happily ever after is.

birthday sultan

friday was dad's birthday.
he is the best ever, and we all love him so much.
we had a big party at his house.

we gave him a gift card for the new glasses he needs with a note that included this picture:

later he blew out his candles, and we had cake.

and then yesterday we went to see the Bruins win

happy birthday, Otis.
love you.

remember

how I got to go work in Scottsdale at the Fort McDowell?
and my name everywhere made me feel right at home?
and when I got to my room, I had a wine and cheese platter waiting for me?

and in between meetings I decided to take a picture of myself and the view from my room?
(and then regretted my decision to take all pictures with my phone and leave the camera at home?)

and took pictures of neat cactuses ? (cacti?)
and later learned from Matt that they are more than 100 years old because of their arms

and went for a gallery stroll in 73 degree weather?

and then to a delicious Italian restaurant which had adorable grape lights hanging from the patio ceiling?
I remember.
it was awesome.

nom nom nom

matt loves crawfish
i love crab

we love each other... and dinner dates

so last night, we went to Bucket O' Crawfish and rolled up our sleeves.
my hands still smell like garlic, but it was worth it.

and you're supposed to sign the wall I guess?
so I left my mark.

oh man, I love whales so much.

I don't know when it started.  I just know that I get teary whenever I think about them.

my mom and I went to see Big Miracle on opening night .
when I heard that there was going to be a movie about whales starring John Krasinski (also lovable) I hyperventilated a little.

how was the movie?  as a movie, it was wholesome entertainment - fun for the whole family.  (my mom loooooooooved it - it's a great choice for moms).  Drew Barrymore was a little too Drew Barrymore-y for my taste... and it certainly had its "ugh - painfully cheesy" moments, but otherwise it was decent.  The theme and the lesson should be in more movies.

as a story? - it was fantastic.  and true (or based on a true story - I loved the actual footage during the credits).  I really love that this happened and that the whole world watched and wanted to save three whales... for no other reason than they needed to be saved.
I only cried four times, and of those, I only cried hysterically once.

I have thought a lot about why I love whales so much.  I have come to this conclusion:
(get ready to barf - I realize I sound like I'm 5)
if you're the biggest thing, you can hold the most love.
I love that they are so big, and so powerful, and so smart...but so gentle.
it's captivating, almost enchanting - and I think there is a lesson for the universe in there somewhere:
big and powerful and smart does not equal mean or violent or terrible.

if the biggest creature is kind and lovable... that's hopeful for me and for the world.
and if you still need reasons for loving whales (?) please direct your attention to this infographic
(I love a good infographic)... the last point re: heart-shaped spouts just about put me over the edge.

whale you be my valentine?

I almost ate bacon

text from my sweet sister-in-law last night:
"Dear Megan, It has been five whole days since your last blog post. :( No whale movie review?"

I have such a devoted audience.  (do 8 or 9 people count as an "audience"?)
yes.

so here's what I've been doing since my last post:

embroider-outlined 26 letters for a very special project.
with just enough thread.

I made cupcakes and other treats for the Superbowl, and of course displayed them in football shapes.

I almost ate bacon.  I have been craving meat.  One day last week I couldn't take it anymore and ordered a bacon and gouda sandwich from starbucks... but chickened out.
I did however enjoy the bacon essence that was left on the sandwich.

and I went to see whale movie.
which I will review in my next post :)
oh man.  it was good.

um... that's called a duplex

I talked to Drew tonight.
he told me all about his neat new apartment.
but didn't do an awesome job describing it.

he said: "it's not like doors doors doors.  It's lots of little buildings that aren't houses, and there are only two in each one that share one wall and we each have our own door"

so I said: "you mean a duplex?"

and then he said: "it's not like doors doors doors. It's lots of little buildings that aren't houses, and there are only two in each one that share one wall and we each have our own door" again.

so because Drew is one of my most loyal blog readers and because I'm such a fantastic artist, I decided I would just draw what he was describing to see if I understood correctly, and post it on my blog.

thank goodness I have finely tuned drawing skills to fall back on when words just aren't enough.

also, Drew I miss you.
